Since GitLab started to offer free service for static page hosting over HTTPS I decided to give it a shot for some old and static websites what I have been hosting for many years for my friends and pals. Immediately I noticed that visiting my user page at https://veilands.gitlab.io it was throwing Error 404 that page is not found. I did not quite like that representation and decided to create this small intro page to get rid of error page.

I'd highly recommend for anyone who is in website development business to try out GitLab services, because you can host unlimited private projects and also you can host unlimited static sites and all that comes with batteries included, the most important for me was ease to deal with SSL certificates, beacause there are many articles out there that modern browsers will soon start to mark all sites which are served over plain old HTTP as insecure and depreciated. Additionally to everything what I have written above there are several options nowadays available to obtain free SSL certificates and that means there is no good reason on why not to upgrade to HTTPS. For example Let's Encrypt is one of my favorites and I'd highly recommend to take a look at their services, they are easy and free to use even for non experienced websites administrators.
